Wallpaper Removal: How It Works

Wallpaper had its peak in popularity during the first half of the 20th century. In recent decades, homeowners have been scrapping wallpaper in favor of painted walls. If you have an older home, you may have some wallpapered rooms that you want to redecorate. Wallpaper removal can be a tricky business and you don’t want to damage your walls in the process. Luckily, Painters Etcetera is here to help! Wallpaper removal is a project we are happy to take off your hands. Here are the different methods we might employ when removing wallpaper from your room.

Pull and Peel

This is the easiest way to get the wallpaper off the wall, but it only works if you have newer wallpaper. Newer wallpaper is designed to be easy to remove. If you pull up the bottom corner of the wallpaper with a scraper or pallet knife and it removes easily, you can usually just pull it right off without much trouble. Chances are, if you have this kind of wallpaper, you can remove it yourself, but you will need any residue removed before you are ready to repaint the wall.

Spray and Scrape

Most wallpaper will be stubborn and a bit of a hassle to remove. With older wallpaper that is not easy to strip, we wet it to remove it from the wall. Spraying the wallpaper with water helps loosen it from the glue and separate it from the wall. To keep the wallpaper from drying out before we can scrape it off the wall, we work in small sections. It’s tedious work, but that’s why we do it for you! The goal of any wallpaper removal project is to remove the wallpaper in the largest possible pieces.

Scoring and Stripping

Depending on the type of wallpaper you have, removing it can take a couple of extra steps. Some wallpapers are “washable,” meaning that they have a plastic coating so that they can be wiped clean. With those wallpapers, we use a scoring tool to put tiny holes through the plastic so that the water can reach the paper underneath. Some wallpapers have a backing that can only be removed from the walls with water and a chemical stripper. The glue holding the wallpaper to the wall must be dissolved so that the wall can be cleaned, treated, and repainted.
