Pro Tips from Your Local Holliston Painters

When it comes time to repaint a room, there are a lot more decisions involved than you might expect. There’s more involved than just picking a paint color and slapping it on the wall. Painting a room is a lot of work and you don’t want to do it twice. At Painters Etcetera, we have lots of experience with paint. From color to finish to quantity, our team of Holliston painters knows all there is to know about paint.

Here are some tips from the pros to help you choose the right paint for your room.

Choose your color

Paint color is not a life-or-death decision, but you want to get it right the first time. A lot of effort goes into painting a room and you don’t want to realize you hate it after doing all that work. Even if you know broadly what color you want (red, blue, gray, yellow, etc.), you need to find the hue that will look best in your room. Collecting paint chips and taking them home is useful, but getting samples and painting some swatches in the room is the best way to tell if you like paint color once it’s actually on your wall. The light in the store is different from the light in your home. A paint color will never look the same in the store as it will at home. You will save yourself a lot of trouble down the road by taking extra time testing out colors.

Choose your finish

In addition to color, you also have to choose a finish. Interior paint typically comes in on one of six finishes:
  • Gloss – This finish is much too shiny for walls. Light reflects off the gloss finish and looks strange on a wall. Gloss is a good choice for baseboards and sometimes cabinets.
  • Semi-gloss – While less shiny than gloss, semi-gloss still has too much shine for large rooms. It is also good for baseboards and cabinets and small, high-moisture rooms, like bathrooms.
  • Satin – With only a slight shine to it, satin is great for high-traffic areas, like hallways and kids’ rooms. It’s easy to clean but won’t reflect back too much light.
  • Eggshell – Slightly less durable than a satin finish, eggshell is good for rooms that you use regularly, but don’t see the same traffic or abuse as a family room or kid’s bedroom.
  • Matte/flat – Matte paint is difficult to clean, so you’ll only want to use it in a room where the walls are rarely touched. Master bedrooms and guest bedrooms are good for a matte or flat finish.

Buy the right amount

This is the tricky part. You don’t want to realize that you’ve run out of paint when you still have half a wall to go. On the other hand, you don’t want to be left with a gallon can you didn’t even open, either. There are paint calculator tools online that can help you figure out how much paint you need. A good rule of thumb is that one gallon of paint will cover 400 square feet. Bear in mind that you will need at least two coats of paint, possibly more if you are painting over a dark color.
